President Donald Trump is expected to ask the House Ways & Means Committee to “major changes” to a proposed repeal of the Affordable Care Act as early as Monday.
The White House released a statement from Vice President Mike Pence on Monday afternoon that said Trump wants to ensure the legislation “ensures access to quality care for all Americans.”
Trump’s request is a major break with decades of Republican efforts to repeal the ACA, and a blow to House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has said he wants to get the bill through.
The bill currently has bipartisan support in the House.
In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Ryan said he had a “proposal” that was “very close” to being approved by the House and Senate, but that it was “in the hands of the House.”
Ryan said Trump is also seeking to “improve” the bill and said it was important to “get the bill passed.”
House Democrats are also expected to unveil their own health care package on Tuesday, with some lawmakers expressing concern that the proposal would be too generous to low-income Americans.
